| Mubleair Xan | |||
| . | |||
Mubleair Xan, or simply "Xan" to the locals, is an island shrouded in mystery, which is ironic considering that the island is otherwise utterly bare and desolate, and very exposed. The meaning of the name has been lost with time, but rumor has it that it means something akin to "Edge of the world." Most simply assume Xan to mean the Edge. The land seems to be nothing but solid rock jutting from the sea. Although the general climate is temperate, the same as neighboring Komadas, the utter bareness of the island gives it very little native flora. What plant life there is was more than likely brought over from Komadas by settlers wishing to stake some sort of claim to the place. Its climate allows the growth of nearly anything there's just very little usable space to grow it.More than anything, Mubleair Xan has become a place to hide and disappear. It is thought to have been founded by castoffs from Komadas. Thieves and criminals from Saotan were taken to the west side of Komadas, and cast into to the unexplored sea to the west. They eventually ran aground on Mubleair Xan and dug out a living. Legend of the lawless island grew, and it became mapped as a normal part of the archipelago. The only truly established town on the isle is Zensen, a strange conglomeration of some 12,000 people, nearly all of whom are in constant transition. Zensen is not a town based on any sort of normal government. It is run by crime lords and smugglers, and whoever has the most money controls the power. The only law is the law of the street, and if visitors can't protect themselves, they'll certainly get no protection from the locals. Enough local farmland "exported" from Komadas helps feed the town, and the only valuable resource on the isle is an unusual flammable liquid oil created from one of the creatures that call the rock home. Since there is so little soil, the oil secreted from these beings collects in pools around the island. It takes a strong party indeed to venture into the rocky wasteland of Xan to collect the substance. Mubleair Xan is not home to a great variety of indigenous creatures, but what they lack in numbers they make up for in ferocity. Oftentimes, local creatures venture into town, since Zensen is not really protected. It's all part of the danger. More than any other island, Mubleair Xan is a pirate's paradise. Transport to the island is hard to come by, and many make large profits from passage alone. Resources and treasures from the other islands are freely bought and sold here, beyond the bounds and taxes of any organized governments. Barbaric practices all but eliminated elsewhere continue to thrive on Xan. Despite its lack of resources, its overabundance of stones, pebbles, sand, trenches and canyons, Mubleair Xan has become a place of dreams, and nightmares of making it big or being cast off the edge of the world. |
