Komadas
.
Komadas is the central hub of the Lost Isles islands, and it is thought that the word Komadas might be a variation of the aoru word for center, or focal point. The largest island in the archipelago, it has the widest variety of flora and fauna, as well as the most varied climate. Komadas was formed by a massive volcanic upheaval, and is divided almost exactly in half longitudinally by a long ridge of mountains. Temperatures in the lush south and east are subtropical and seldom cold. The volcano-blasted west is barren and more moderate in temperature. To the north, the climate gradually cools, primarily due to increased altitude of the landmass.

Komadas is populated by several races and sentient creatures, the most ordinary of which are the tree-dwelling aoru and tenacious humans, or cirath. The aoru have populated the island since the beginning of recorded history. In general they have kept to themselves, having only intermittent contact with the Aduan races. The humans – relative infants in the grand scheme of archipelago history – crashed ashore a mere 1300 years ago. It wasn’t long before the humans befriended the aoru, though over time the aoru moved northward, and the humans settled primarily in the south. The winding Hebi River connects the two races as a pipeline of travel.

Because of its central location in the archipelago, and a moderate climate suited to many races, Komadas has become a melting pot of sorts, especially in the largest city of the islands, Saotan. Because of the human emphasis on trade and exploration, Saotan is the main port in the Lost Isles. It is said that if a ship passes by Saotan without stopping, it must be lost. In their relatively short time in the islands, the humans have managed to form the seven prime races into a sort of alliance. Representatives of the islands created a common language understood by all the races, and more importantly a unified economy system based on each island’s primary valuable resource. Each island has a unique coin. These coins are all meant to be of equal value, although fluctuations and events on individual islands have made this a wishful concept.

Komadas’ key value-oriented resource is gold, which was discovered in large quantities in the blasted out plains west of Omatsu, an active volcano and the largest mountain on the island. The town of Deng was founded purely as a mining and processing town, and supports the coin of Komadas, the kei, which is shared by the humans and aoru. Other important resources of the island include many varieties of wood and quarries of granite.

Komadas thus operates as the cultural, diplomatic, and commercial hub of the Lost Isles. It is the crossroads of shipping, and a land of opportunity. But with its size and diversity come a myriad of wild creatures, lurking denizens of the volcanoes, and hidden terrors. Let no one get the idea that Komadas is a safe haven, for outside the protection of Saotan and the loftier grasp of the aoru capital city Piiya, danger does exist. But perhaps it is nothing beyond the ability of the conglomeration of its varied citizens and inhabitants to handle. For nearly all men and women would go to great lengths to protect their precious jewel…
