| The Sea Serpents of the Lost Isles
. . . . Sea Serpents: (subclass- aquatic) There is very little known about the sea serpents of the Lost Isles. One has never been captured alive, and any killed at sea are recovered only in pieces. It is speculated that the sea serpents were the first inhabitants of the world, roaming the seas as a dominant and intelligent species when all other creatures and races were still in their amoeba stages. The aoru believe that the sea serpents are the majestic kings and queens of the second world, and though other races of the islands may not share in the aoru religious belief, it is not uncommon for the races to revere the sea serpents as something above and beyond the average creature. |

| Sea serpents are intelligent. This assumption stems from the fact that one has never been caught, and that they display complex communication and organization when they attack ships. Most believe that there are incredibly vast underwater cities at the bottom of the ocean floor which the sea serpents call home. The folklore that has grown from this belief is rich, and inspires many a wondrous tale and song. It was not uncommon in more barbaric times for captains of ships to make sacrifices to the serpents. Being a crewman on a sailing vessel carried much risk, but most sailors countered the danger with a belief that if they were swallowed whole by a sea serpent, they would survive in the gullet of the creature and be carried down to the glorious undersea city, to discover riches beyond their wildest dreams. Some sailors believe that when they die, their souls will end up in the city of the sea serpents, so great is the allure of that fabled land. There is no one distinct look to the sea serpent. They come in many colors, with many subtle variations. It is believed that there are many different types of sea serpent, but no one has been able to create a solid classification system for them. All serpents are sinuous, and they range up to hundreds of feet long and hundreds of feet around in their torsos. Some serpents have tentacles, some claws, some webbed appendages, some spines, and all have teeth. All are believed to command the common fishes and creatures of the seas, and some folktales even grant the serpents power over the weather and ocean squalls. There is an annual gathering of serpents off the southwest coast of Komadas. Most scholars speculate that this is for breeding purposes, and that the serpents gather to find mates and breed before scattering off again into the four directions. Other scholars dispute this theory and instead explain the gathering as a serpent “social”…a time when young serpents are brought to the surface to meet the serpents of other families or bloodlines as befits such intelligent creatures. Though the first theory is more widely held, both are pure hypothesis, since no mortal has ever sailed into those particular waters during the gatherings and survived to tell the tale. Some ships have sailed close to the outskirts, but are generally unable to collect any hard facts other than “lots and lots of serpents, roiling waters, stormy clouds in the sky, high waves, very dangerous.” It is believed that the sea serpents are the genetic parents of all of the land species of dragons. |
