| Sumil Kai’s Land Dragons: (subclass-scaled) The giant lizards of Sumil Kai are actually not lizards at all, but rather a subclass of dracona. The land dragons live in small family groups, and are very territorial. They guard their territory against intruders at all costs. A close comparison to the social structure of the land dragons is a wolf pack, though the dragons are more intelligent. They communicate through very deep “huffing” noises created by an extra air pouch in their throats, and through subsonic vibrations they create in their bodies and can send through the ground to each other to be picked up in the feet of the others nearby. Their vibration-sensitive feet can also detect movement in the surrounding environment with great skill, and it is nearly impossible to ever surprise a dragon. Land dragons are not tamable, and because of their hostility towards intruders in their homes, make very disagreeable neighbors. Their lifespan is five to six centuries long, and they bear young only once every few hundred years. The creatures are approximately twenty to twenty-five feet long, and walk low to the ground on thick, muscular legs with long curled claws. They are meat eaters, and can swallow small- to medium-sized animals in a single swallow (the flexible skin and musculature of the throat helps with this). Their skulls are huge, supported on powerful, thick necks, and a series of sharp spines protrudes down the spine. Their tail is about a third of their length, the skin is rough and finely scaled like smooth beads, and their overall coloring is gray to grayish brown. Land dragons are highly toxic, with a very caustic blood, and saliva that can erode metal. They are notorious for the long slather streams which constantly drip from their jaws, often leaving burn marks on tree trunks that they rub their jaws up against (to scratch that itch). Land dragons leave very noticeable trails when they travel through the forest. The dragons have the ability to spit this toxin a distance of thirty feet, though are immune to it themselves. Land dragons prefer to live in rocky environments where their acidic effluvia will not erode their dens as fast. They like isolated rock quarries, boulder-strewn hills, rocky mountainsides, or caves with sunning ledges (land dragons enjoy the sun and are not nocturnal). They will travel the extent of their territory in their search for food. They do not need to eat every day, and after a good feeding, can often go more than several weeks between meals. Female land dragons gestate for five years, during which time they are extra aggressive and twice as hungry. Young dragons are born live, but do not suckle in the way of mammals. Young dragons are fed regurgitated meat by the adults of the family pack. Dragons are born with their poison, and are able to spit with accurate aim within three weeks. Until then, they must bite an animal or victim to poison it. |
